A practical look at how welt construction affects repairability, feel, and long-term wear.
Customers often ask which construction lasts longer. The honest answer is that longevity depends on the whole build: leather, insole, welt, midsole, outsole, care, and whether the pair is repaired before damage spreads.
What the welt actually does
The welt is the bridge between the upper and the sole structure. It gives the outsole something serviceable to attach to, which is why the pair can be resoled instead of discarded after the first outsole wears down.

How to choose
Choose hand-welted when repairability, traditional build, and a more involved construction story matter most. Choose Goodyear-welted when you want a strong, familiar construction with a cleaner production rhythm.
Workshop note
Construction is not a magic word. A badly fitted or poorly cared-for hand-welted pair can still fail early. The better question is how the whole specification supports the way you wear it.
